Obsah

The course focuses on practical learning in the studio. It introduces different light sources and their characteristics. It teaches students the correct handling and selection of light sources. The characteristics of light sources are introduced and explained. Hands-on instruction develops students' abilities to work on the studio floor plan with little equipment requirements. It emphasizes awareness of working with a light source, its nature, importance and functionality. The next part of the course introduces methods of working with multiple light sources. These methods are practically demonstrated highlighting their advantages and pitfalls. Each method is illustrated with examples from the work of renowned artists. In this part of the course, students carry out a specific exercise, which is linked to the Photography Techniques 03 course, and which extends the necessary photographic knowledge and skills for creating a product catalogue.

Main topics

1-2/ Theoretical introduction to the subject - explanation of characteristic light sources - flash studio lights and their accessories and artificial lights in different variations and their demonstration - practical demonstration. Explanation of the concept, meaning and purpose of the semester exercise „White on White“

3/ Sources of inspiration - demonstration and analysis of photographs by David Baylei, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Ton Stan and others.

4/ Starting work on the exercise „White square on white background“ - introduction of the special working procedure, preparation of the workplace

5 - 8/ Work on the task with emphasis on adequate lighting and maintaining uniformity of light intensity

9 - 10 Complete post-production and its effective tools, especially Camera Raw and the solarization filter in Photoshop.

11/ Post-production at the scale of straight photography - the benefits of 16bit image depth

12/ Evaluating the results in the form of a presentation, identifying technical problems and how to solve them

Výsledky učení

The student is oriented in the lighting technique as a part of photographic study, knows the individual specifics, chooses the appropriate technique. He/she knows how to prepare a workplace for the realization of specific assignments. The student masters the implementation of photographic shooting in relation to the assignment or purpose. Knows how to use post-production tools in the context of direct photography. Determining the correct white tonality to be within printable range (5%black) is a fundamental skill that the student takes away.
