Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning
The programme does not have any specific requirements for the recognition of prior learning.
The procedure for recognition at AMU is governed by Articles 89 and 90 of the Act on Higher Education Institutions No. 111/1998 Coll., as amended, and by the AMU Attendance and Examination Regulations (Articles 8, 14, 18).
Qualification requirements and regulations
Required qualifications: Completed university education in a Bachelor`s programme in the field of production or a related field (e.g. theatrical management, arts management, etc.).
Regulations: The Czech education system is governed by the Act on Higher Education Institutions, as amended (Act No. 111/1998 Coll.), and by the internal regulations of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.
Field of study characterization
The Master`s programme builds on the Bachelor's programme and is intended for its successful graduates as well as for other students. Despite the fact that the programme`s main focus are various theatrical forms including modern ones (new circus, scenographic theatre, happenings on the fringe of genres, etc.), unlike the Bachelor?s programme instruction is expanded to other areas, in particular so-called live scenic art (also called „performing arts“), i.e. dance and music, and peripherally to other types of art as well.
The content of the main subjects is determined in particular by the selected programme specialisation (see www.damu.cz), or the approved topic of the Master`s project. This provides for an individual approach to the student, for whom an individual study focus is formulated on the basis of the adopted theoretical direction and by agreement with an expert consultant; the focus is based on the student`s professional interests, his/her acquired practice, experience and possibly also his/her Bachelor`s programme.
The instruction is focused in particular on developing the student`s creative production and managerial abilities, on his/her personal development and on a research project in a selected area.
The instructional methods also include direct contact with prominent producers, artists and experts in the area of arts management (in the non-commercial and business spheres alike), or direct contact on the part of students with events in the area of culture e.g. by attending scholarly conferences or participating in seminars organised by the most variegated entities active in culture.
Key learning outcomes
A graduate of the Master`s programme in production has been familiarised with all areas of running a theatrical operation in all forms in the Czech Republic and in part also abroad. He/she has detailed knowledge of the situation in contemporary culture and on the media scene, and is trained in skills such as management, organisation and communication. He/she is led to independence and creativity, and thus has the requisite skills for working in the top management of theatrical institutions, as an independent producer in the performing arts, or as a specialist in the areas of economics, marketing, management or law within the scope of running an artistic, and in particular theatrical, operation.
Occupational profiles of graduates with examples
Graduates are capable of independently defining artistic projects, performing analyses and feasibility studies of artistic projects, defining strategic and realisation plans, assembling working teams, directing them, and possibly leading smaller theatrical organisations or the non-artistic departments of large institutions in the performing arts.
Graduates are prepared for work in the management of theatrical institutions, in particular non-profit repertory theatres, possibly business entities in culture, or as independent initiators of artistic activities - producers, possibly analysts in the area of the conditions of running an artistic operation.
Access to further studies
The Master`s programme in the field of production can be followed e.g. by the doctoral programme in the field of Theory and Practice of Theatrical Creation or in the field of Alternative Puppet Creation and Theory of Alternative Puppet Creation. It is also possible to continue with certain doctoral programmes in cultural management abroad.
Examination regulations, assessment and grading
Studies are assessed by credits and examinations stipulated by study plans. The student is informed of these through the information system.
The student registers for examinations using the information system, and is entitled to a second and third attempt to pass an examination. If neither of these attempts proves successful, the Dean may in exceptional cases permit a fourth attempt (administered by a commission). It is not permitted to repeat an examination for the main subjects.
The credit is an ungraded form of assessment of studies. It is allocated upon fulfilment of requirements stipulated for individual subjects and is recorded in the information system with the word „Credited“ (Z). An examination is a graded form of assessment of studies, which tests knowledge and level of creativity in the relevant subject. An examination may be practical, written, oral or involve a combination of these methods. Examinations are graded on the scale „A, B, C, D, E, F“.
Graduation requirements
The student fulfils the requirements corresponding to the study plan.
The student passes the final state examination.
The Master`s examination is the culmination of the student`s individual study plan, which focuses on the student`s professional specialisation. The examination is thus based in particular on the submitted Master`s diploma thesis, which must have the character of a creative work. It is thus not a simple summary of the problem, but a revelatory and creative approach and a distinctive method of thought, the result of which is an original solution which has fundamental qualitative significance for the field studied. The defence of the diploma thesis and the subsequent discussion on scholarly questions has the character of a dialogue between the student and members of the commission, which evaluates in particular the student`s independent creative thought in the context of the topic of the submitted work and of the graduate`s future professional application.
Contents of the State Master`s Examination:
- the defence of the Master`s diploma thesis;
- an examination on the theory of the field (theatrical production; arts management and arts marketing; economics, law and theatre operations).
