Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning
A documentable completed Bachelor`s education in an artistic or related field.
The procedure for recognition at AMU is governed by Articles 89 and 90 of the Act on Higher Education Institutions No. 111/1998 Coll., as amended, and by the AMU Attendance and Examination Regulations (Articles 8, 14, 18).
Qualification requirements and regulations
A completed Bachelor's education in stage design or a related field, an overview of creative activities heretofore, the ability to do independent creative work in close interaction with other fields of study in the Department of Alternative Theatre at DAMU in the studios offered by the department.
Regulations: The Czech education system is governed by the Act on Higher Education Institutions, as amended (Act No. 111/1998 Coll.), and by the internal regulations of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.
Field of study characterization
The basic circles of interest remain: puppet theatre, movement theatre, new circus and other experimental theatrical and para-theatrical forms, as well as the interaction of stage design with other forms of art, i.e. drama, dance and architecture. The new missions of stage design remain: theatre in non-theatrical spaces, stage design of public spaces, scenic use of abandoned spaces, stage design for new media. It is characteristic of the field to search for and connect creators also from non-theatrical fields - in the humanities and technical fields alike.
Last but not least is cultivation of the ability to collaborate in a team, where the interdependence of stage design and the other fields taught in the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre at DAMU (dramaturgy, directing, acting) which together form the academic programme in the field - dramatic arts - is decisive, and students in various fields work together in close contact on practical exercises, presentations and productions. Thus, a model of the practice which students will encounter after graduation is created in the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre at DAMU.
Key learning outcomes
Ability to create independently in theatrical and para-theatrical projects, stage design metaphors and setting contexts with dramatic material. In addition to the basic knowledge connected with the programme's completion, the graduate is capable of working with his/her own creativity, epistemic and inventive potential, and an imaginative and original relationship to:
- space (space: delineated, denominated, scenic intervention into new environments, event stage design, stage design for public and abandoned spaces)
- objects (conditions, materials and functions)
- light (light: dramatic component of theatrical space and stage design of light cones)
- architecture, stage design for new media and the search for possibilities of interaction between stage design and other firms of art (environment and style, lighting, function).
Occupational profiles of graduates with examples
A graduate is capable of working in a team as well as independently in cultural projects and theatrical productions, where he/she can be employed as a stage designer in various types of theatres, in open-air theatrical productions, in theatrical productions in public space, and in independent installations. He/she can lead thematic workshops (e.g. stage and costume design in view of the workshop's social and educational aspects), or work as a curator, realiser and initiator of projects and festivals. A graduate is prepared to be an initiator and active member of a creative team, and to continue to train in the field in order to activate his/her epistemic and creative potential. Through his/her work, the graduate specifies the role of stage design in contemporary experimental forms and developmental trends.
Access to further studies
Possibility of doctoral studies in the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre or other departments at DAMU or at other university-level art schools or schools with a similar humanities and artistic focus in the Czech Republic and abroad.
Examination regulations, assessment and grading
Studies are assessed by credits and examinations stipulated by study plans. The student is informed of these through the information system. The student registers for examinations using the information system, and is entitled to a second and third attempt to pass an examination. If neither of these attempts proves successful, the Dean may in exceptional cases permit a fourth attempt (administered by a commission). It is not permitted to repeat an examination for the main subjects or to repeat written examinations. In the Master?s programme, assessment emphasises mainly an independent, collectively and creatively realised interesting work either in DAMU`s theatrical premises or a public realisation of cultural projects (e.g. in a theatre, in a community / public space, etc.).
The credit is an ungraded form of assessment of studies. It is allocated upon fulfilment of requirements stipulated for individual subjects and is recorded in the information system with the word „Credited“ (Z). An examination is a graded form of assessment of studies, which tests knowledge and level of creativity in the relevant subjects. In the main subjects, examinations are administered by a commission. Examinations are graded on the scale „A, B, C, D, E, F“. In the main subjects relating to visual and dramatic form, examinations take the form of a presentation of works in an exhibition or collective theatrical production.
Graduation requirements
Completion of the Master`s programme in all subjects and accumulation of the relevant number of credits. Completion of the State Master`s Examination.
A condition for advancement to the Master`s examination is in particular the realisation of an independent creative project.
The state final examination is graded on the scale „A, B, C, D, E, F“. The examination committee shall decide the overall assessment for the state final examination by vote in-camera.
The State Master`s Examination consists of the following parts:
the Master`s diploma thesis and its defence;
the history and theory of dramatic arts;
the history and theory of the field.
