Matthew Goodheart: The Question of Instrument: acoustics, space, and reembodied sound
Matthew Goodheart is a composer, performer, and sound installation artist whose work investigates the interrelationship between acoustics, technology, and spatial composition. Most well-known for his “reembodied sound” electroacoustic technique which uses audio transducers to actuate musical instruments, his artistic output ranges from concert works and free improvisation to immersive sound installations. In this talk he will trace the history of his instrumental acoustics-based musical poetics in microtonal composition, timbre-based improvisation, and the development of reembodied sound techniques and its use recent site-specific, mixed-media and interactive works.
Goodheart has received numerous awards and honors, including the Berlin Prize in Music Composition, a Fulbright Grant, and a Civitella Ranieri Fellowship. Recordings of his works appear on Infrequent Seams, pfMentum, Eremite, Evander Music, and NineWinds. He is an Assistant Professor of Music Composition at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
