Learning objectives:

The study is mainly aimed at supporting the development of students' creative individuality, the formation of their own distinctive artistic style and musical opinions. Emphasis is placed on understanding the current situation of the field and one's own position in it. The course develops the ability to think independently and conceptually clearly in music composition and teaches how to formulate one's own musical ideas into a performable and intelligible notation and sound form.

Thematic areas:

In the last semester of Master‘s studies, the focus is on the completion of the Master‘s graduate composition and the written thesis. A graduate Master's composition in its difficulty and scope (approximately 15-20 minutes) corresponds to a substantial composition for symphony orchestra. However, it may also be a different score, e.g. a major work for a large chamber ensemble, a concertante work, a work with a vocal component, a work supported by digital technology etc., or a set of such works. The specific assignment, compositional technique, score, and other specifics are determined by the department on an individual basis, taking into account the student's focus. It is assumed that the two diploma assignments (composition and thesis) are linked in content. The course develops the ability to think independently and conceptually clearly in music composition and teaches how to formulate one's own musical ideas into a performable and intelligible notation and sound form. Emphasis is also placed on the student's ability to comment knowledgeably on professional issues and on the ability to articulate his or her creative aesthetics and theoretical-compositional conclusions in writing and orally.

Learning outcomes

The student is capable of independent, distinctive compositional thinking, developing their own creative and theoretical concepts and applying these results to the compositional and written components of the diploma assignment, within which they presents their own solutions and conclusions.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Completion of the assigned composition tasks, especially the graduate Master's composition and the written thesis, is assessed. The student's readiness to take the state final examination and successfully defend the diploma assignments is verified. The main criterion is the artistic and compositional technical level of the submitted compositions. Additional criteria include the graphic realisation and informative level of the submitted scores and the ability to defend one's creative intentions and procedures in a professionally informed manner. Master's compositions are usually performed prior to the state examination, so the course of the assessment is usually the actual sound form of the work already realised, in addition to the score or an indicative recording.

Other requirements: participation in events organised by the department, especially concerts and other performances, and a demonstrated interest in the profession field.

The examination committee consists of the teachers of the department, credit examination is awarded by the head teacher on the basis of the committee's deliberations.

Minimum attendance is not set.
