Mode of study

Part of the classes, aside from discussion and debates on stagings is also meta-criticism devoted to considerations of what the students wish, in their written critiques, to achieve. One instruction method will be group discussions on texts which come up during the semester.

Course contents

This course is focused on reviewing stagings which will be available to view in Prague and at festivals during the given semester. There is an emphasis on those which overstep the boundaries of traditional interpretive drama theatre. The aim of the group work is not only to be a critical review of individual titles but also an effort to find and identify in the neglected field „alternative“ theatre (relatively) firm points.

Issue range:

  1. Various understandings of the concept „alternative theatre“
  2. Possible forms of „alternative theatre“
  3. Changes is the relationship and hierarchy of elements of a theatre piece in „alternative theatre“
  4. Overlaps of „alternative theatre“ into other arts
  5. Evaluation and judging criteria
  6. Changes in creators
  7. Changes in audience

Part of the course, aside from discussion and argument about stagings is also part of meta-critique, devoted to considerations of what the students wish to achieve in their critiques. Who are their readers and what criteria is appropriate for a critique. Further, considerations about the position of a critic in the theatre world and their responsibility towards readers, artists, the media in which they publish, and finally toward themselves. One instruction method will be group critical discussions on texts that are created during the semester.

Assessment methods and criteria

Minimum 80% attendance and class participation including visiting all selected stagings (at least 3) 50%.

On-going writings on assigned genres (at least 3) 30%.

Constructive critical evaluation of other students' work 20%.
