Learning outcomes of the course unit

Instruction aim

The instruction aim is to find a manner of refining characters. To define processes on working on constructing figures in theatre and in film and an understanding of the specific procesees of working with animated film.

Through etude studies an awareness of movement expression from the actor's perspective is focused on and deepened.

Instruction results

Students discover and adopt principles of constructing characters in space and time.

Mode of study

Intensive study - the block contains in the studio a lab body and space at the FAMU Animated Film Dept. palace Avalon. This combines theory lectures on character studies with practical acting and animation tasks.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

This course in intended for primarily animated film directors but also directing studies at FAMU, DAMU and HAMU.

Instruction content


Film acts with use of parts of one's body, objects and materials using knowledge of acting gestures and mimic to help transform acting mimickry to a „fictional body“. The subsequent study combines live games with one's body and games with objects techniques and the use of stop-motion animation puppets with human body construction and animation material from which some figures may be modelled from. In this task, students uncover principles of structuring a character in time and space.

Assessment methods and criteria

Participation in intensive study at the given time. Student is awarded credit upon completion of the theory and practice instruction and submission of the film exercise according to the given instructor. Shooting is part of the instruction practical. Editing continues until the end of the exam period of the given semester.


Character studies assist in orienting oneself in the issues of creating figures in the preparation phase of the film and in working on the script. Devices for drawing characters are useful in directing in animated and feature films as well as theatre performances.
