Learning outcomes of the course unit

An introductory course for working with the modular programming device Max/MSP/Jitter, focused on a basic understanding of the environment for practical application in theatre, VJ-ing, interactive applications, media installations and general media production in real time. Students are to be able to independently create a simple application for recording multimedia.

Course contents

The Max environment is intended for designing multi-media applications and performances in real time with complete support of various media and data types. With Max, it is possible to interactively link video, multi-channel sound, sound sythesizers and generative graphics, 3D models and vector graphics, sensory inputs, MIDI and OSC protocols and much more.

The first part of the course is devoted to a basic bearing in the development environment, types of object, structure of graphics interface, changing and basic data operations. Following this will be independent introductions to graphics environment Jitter, sound environment MSP and structure of workflow for use in practice.

The result of the modules will be students completing their own media player with a selected unique functionality.

This course is recommended as an entry pre-requisite for following advanced modules devoted to sound sythesis, work with image matrices and 3D models.

The module will use Max8, which may be acquired in trial version from the pages of Cycling '74. 4 full licenses will be available on school computers in room 423, which allow saving of compositions. For school projects, in the future it will be possible to use the FAMU CAS licence or one's own licence may be purchased at a significant student discount.

It is necessary to complete 100% of the module

Execution of one's multi-media application during the course. Preparations at home are not presupposed.
