Profile of a programme graduate

Profile of a graduate of the Bachelor’s programme of study in Sound Design and Music Directing

Specialist knowledge

A graduate of the three-year Bachelor’s programme of study in Sound Design and Music Directing has broad theoretical and practical knowledge of the individual phases of the recording process during both the recording and post-production of a musical work. His or her music-theoretical grounding allows for a versatile understanding of a musical composition with respect to sound, as well as an understanding of the technical parameters and possibilities of an audio recording. In addition to theoretical knowledge in musically and technically oriented subjects, the graduate also demonstrates an overview of the basic areas of acoustics, aesthetics, psychology and communication. He or she is proficient in English for specialist purposes at the required level. The graduate uses historically verified recording procedures and understands how they influence the resulting audio footage, how to assess artistic and technical quality, the usability of recorded music, and the possibilities of post-production.

Specialist skills

The programme graduate makes use of theoretical findings to select the recording method from preparation to post-production with a view to its purpose. The graduate is able to actively create a recording strategy and collaborate on the preparation and planning of the individual phases of the creative and technological stages in the recording process. The graduate knows the proven methods of studio and live recording, and is able to expertly discuss them in practice and to defend their selection. He or she is able to work with instrumentation and to use software for professional sound processing, recording and post-production. He or she is able to resolve challenging situations in practice, e.g. in the event of a failure of the recording equipment.

General competencies

The graduate is capable of creative self-reflection, and of discovering new ways to grasp sound material. He or she perceives the importance of leveraging communication and sociological ties when collaborating in a team and with performers. The graduate is able to independently find his or her bearings, learn new things, and continuously acquire additional specialist knowledge, skills and competencies – both by analysing his or her own experience, as well as through self-study of theoretical and practical findings in the field.

The graduate is also able to apply his or her knowledge in artistic research and in artistic-scientific contexts. He or she is self-motivated and self-disciplined in view of the challenges posed by the tasks. The graduate is aware of his or her own responsibility for the result of a team endeavour. He or she respects the ethical boundaries of the field relating to the quality of the recorded performance and the level of elaboration. He or she is well-oriented in the possibilities of using media to present and promote his or her own work, as well as teamwork, in implementing projects of various genres, in particular with a focus on classical music, jazz, or film music, as the case may be.
