Tom helped me structure my screenplays without imposing any kind of rigid formulas. His extraordinary guidance - with character always in the forefront -- enriched my screenplays immensely. He?s a great teacher!
Caroline Link, Writer-Director Nowhere in Africa (2003 Academy Award)
Telling compelling stories through film challenges you to go on a parallel emotional and psychological journey with your characters, trusting your creative and intuitive instincts rather than relying on commercial formulas.
The Screenwriter as Storyteller is a two-day, experiential workshop that will show you how to connect the dots between your creative journey while writing, the essential analytical considerations about structure, and the commercial demands of today?s marketplace.
You will learn Four Interlocking Dramatic Models -- used successfully in the U.S, Europe, Africa and Asia for twenty years - that will show you how to interweave plot, character, point of view and theme into innovative, engrossing screenplays, while maintaining the optimal resonance with your stories.
Internationally renowned Script Doctor Tom Schlesinger will also show you how to transform the fears and self-limiting beliefs that come up while you write into a powerful resource for solving middle act problems and generating new, original film story ideas.
Through lecture, film clips and creativity exercises, you will learn:
1. How to find and connect to the through-line of your stories
2. How to modulate the balance between character, relationship, and action to build dramatic momentum and reveal theme
3. How to create original characters and stories from your personal experiences
AMELIE, NOWHERE IN AFRICA, TALK TO HER, THE TALENTED MISTER RIPLEY, LOST IN TRANSLATION, and CITY OF GOD are some of the films we will explore during our weekend together.
Tom Schlesinger?s wisdom, inspiration, and deep understanding of character and story continue to guide me on each screenwriting journey.
Pamela Gray, screenwriter A Walk on the Moon, Music of the Heart
Tom has been my constant guide and inspiration!
Doris Dörrie, Writer-Director Men, Nobody Loves Me, Am I Beautiful?
