What is so important about „documentary photography“ today? Learn to understand documentary principles.Several accomplished photographers having affiliations with documentary photography,like: Aaron Siskind, Harry Callahan, Bill Brandt, Paul Strand, Werner Bischof, Robert Frank etc. Difference between „documenting“ and „interpreting“. To master editing one´s own work. Learn to accept criticism from the outside - one of the guarantie of personal growth.Visual language of „documentary“ next to the wide stream of visual medias. How to treat the archives of photographers who are not around any more. Corporation giants like, Corbis/Microsoft, Getty Images etc. Video versus still photography?

List of Assignments - 2nd year

„The book project“ /Prague´s city centres/ a documentary book.

Prague now is changing rapidly. Apart from Wenceslau square we find equally important spots elsewhere. Prague has become a more cosmopolitan and dynamic city. We see many juxtapositions around us. Especially the eyes of a newcomer from abroad /often our student at FAMU!/ can discover this and thus successfully record much of that on the film. Your task is to choose one of the contemporary Prague´s locations and produce a documentary book on it.

The creative process is following:

1/make your choice after consultation with your teacher

2/ write down an outline of a project

3/ start photographing and continually deliver contact sheets,proof prints for editing

4/ select 25-30 prints

5/ make a book dummy first

deadline - June 2006

Student directed portfolio (exhibition series) main task of 2nd year- A set of 8-12 well printed or even mounted photographs in paspartoos which represent the skill of our student that he or she learned during the two years at FAMU. These photographs are meant as the final exhibition series for the commission at the end of the school year. Such work is for some time consulted with and supervised by deliberately chosen teacher.

The creative process is following:

1/ consultations with chosen teacher

2/ evaluationof contact sheets and proof prints

3/ selection and printing of 8-12 photographs of 30x40cm or 50x60cm size

deadline - June 2006

Grading: The students assignments /does not apply to exhibition series/ will be evaluated by supervising teacher /V.K./, also the attendance of seminars /hours of attendance set by by the Department/, individual engagement will contribute as well to final grading.
