Description:

What is the current state of the Czech Republic? What are the manifestations of today's society that was fundamentally changed in the „velvet revolution“ in 1989? What are the values of this society, and how have the political changes manifested themselves in lives of people and in the image of the newly-established state called Czech? How does the contemporary young generation respond to the situation? These are some of the questions we will consider and discuss with the students, trying to capture in photographs the current state in the Czech Republic including its characteristic manifestations.

Photographing will be accompanied by a series of lectures given by various specialists (historians, sociologist, political scientists, urbanists etc), who will introduce the subject to students from different points of view. The lectures will be held in Lažanský palác or other places suitable for the issue.

Photographing will be organized in respect to the number of students interested in the project, follow-up dividing of particular topics and creating the schedule. Common trips to selected places in the Czech Republic will enable the participants to live through certain reality that will later be discussed and reflected. We plan a couple of common trips lasting several days.

The students will be guided to create their individual approaches to the problem and their cooperation on the shared issue will be subjected to the common aim - i.e. the final series. The stress is not on solitary photographs. What is essential is the testimony presented in a persuasive photographic way. The whole project will result in a final exhibition of all participants. In that phase we will discuss selection of the photographs, suitable mounting and overall presentation.

Apart from the exhibition the selected photographs will be published in a publication that will be created after common consultations in cooperation with a graphic designer and exhibition architect.

Assignments: (practical 1P9, 2P11, 3P9, 4P5, 5P5)

1) photographic intentions of the student in writing - till 31st October

2) contact sheets and selected pictures - ca 13x18 cm - handed in during the course of project, the dates will be specified by the supervisors

3) photographs, their size will be specified later

Grading:

A credit - for approved explanatory essay and samples of photographs

A graded credit - awarded on the basis of completing individual tasks and handing in selected photographs. Another assumption to be awarded by the graded credit is 60% attendance in lectures, taking part in stated obligatory consultations and handing in agreed-on photographs in the digital form in TIF format with a resolution of 300 dpi and the longer side of each photograph being 250 mm.
