Making a documentary film on your own.
Knowing how to operate the camera and hook up the microphone makes it easier for the filmmaker to communicate at a creative and and purely practical level with the camera person and sound person, or even to perform those functions him/herself if necessary. The documentary filmmaker usually does not stage the scenes that are being filmed (though there are exceptions!), but instead carefully observes and records, and the camera person is heavily involved in this task. Therefore, the documentary filmmaker must be capable of viewing the object of interest through the camera and listen through headphones. The intuitive use of audiovisual recorders (camera and tape recorder) results in enjoyment from raw material: everything filmed is surprising, and what by chance turns out well is pleasing. The purpose of the course is confirmed when this surprise (and enjoyment) fades and is replaced by an awareness of everything that could have been filmed better at a particular moment, and then next time doing that. The next level is when these improvements occur right during filming...
Note: Upon graduating from FAMU it is better to forget these skills and try to resurrect that sense of joy from an unconscious fascination with film. And that is the highest level: creativity.
