An introduction to graphic design and typography. The basics of working with graphics computer programs. Individual solutions for designing and typesetting simple documents, with an emphasis on the relationship between the photographic image, letters and the graphic sign.

Grading: Credit and graded credit. The following aspects will have an influence on the student?s final grade: creative invention, understanding of the pre-printing preparation process, together with the quality of the final print-outs.

Course Outline: The course provides the theoretical and technical basis for the creation of printed material of limited extent. At the theoretical level attention is paid to the historical and aestetic fondation of Roman letters, the creation of logos and font design, the development of graphic design with respect to the styles and intelectual currents of the period and with the development of typography. It likewise covers current trends in graphic design. In the practical part it is concerned with the technical basis for the design and typesetting of simple printed works in InDesign. The coordination of tasks while working with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. It includes orientation with fonts, typesetting and column breaks in single-sided documents. The rules of typesetting and the preparation for digital printing.
Assignments: (assignment 2P8) For the winter semester credit: 1/ 2005 New Year greeting card for the Department of Still Photography, deadline: November 20th 2007, format 1/3 A4, one side print. 2/ Invitation card to the student?s own exhibition, format 210x100 mm, one side print Output requirements: Layout print on format A4, inkjet or laser printer. The work choosen by Department jury will be realised in real press process as a official Department New Year Card. For the summer semester credit: 1/ Advertising poster for a photography exhibition, format A 3 2/ Booklet for CD (120x120 mm), 1. and 4. page. Output requirements: Layout inkjet prints on format A4 (1) and A3 (2)
