Synopsis:

The seminar focuses on the domestic experience of contemporary German-language theatre as a significant phenomenon in current theatre production, which has by no accident made itself present on the Czech stage in recent years. From the Austrian „master of exaggeration“ Thomas Bernhard, to other controversial playwrights, the drastic and self-destructive Werner Schwab, Nobel Laureate for literature in 2004 Elfriede Jelinek, the eternal enfant terrible of Austrian theatre Peter Turrini, to the generation of thirty-somethings, such as R. Schimmelpfennig and Deu Loher.

The thematic areas covered will include: reflections on the poetics of individual authors, differences in production style in different theatres + the question of how much these dramas are currently concretely and systematically determining the shape of individual theatres.

The following productions will be discussed in the seminar, along with others if they emerge in the repertoire of individual theatres, with a view to the long experience of staging these works on Czech stages and the productions that have especially attracted attention in the past ten years: T. Bernhard: Ritter, Dene, Voss, Histrionics, Immanuel Kant, The Eve of Retirement, Minetti, W. Schwab: The Presidents, E. Jelinek: Illness or Modern Woman).
