Hollywood´s Nuclear Wars
Prof. Peter Kuznick,
American University
FRIDAY, APRIL 25th
2pm
First Floor Screening Room
In 1945, the United States became the first and only country to ever drop atomic bombs in warfare. But over the past 63 years, Hollywood has repeatedly killed millions and sometimes billions of people in planet-destroying full-scale nuclear wars, and, most recently, attacks by nuclear terrorists. This lecture will explore the evolution of nuclear war films, focusing largely on the images and messages that Hollywood conveyed during the 1946-1964 period - the height of the Cold War. Includes a screening of Dr. Strangelove (Stanley Kubrick).
Peter Kuznick is Professor of History and Director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University in Washington, DC. He organized the Committee for a National Discussion of Nuclear History and Current Policy in opposition to the Smithsonian?s 2003 display of the Enola Gay - the plane that bombed Hiroshima and co-founded the Nuclear Education Project. He teaches courses on film and history and writes extensively about the history of the nuclear arms race. He is currently working on a major film project with Oliver Stone.
