Course description:

The Open Archives project is designed to introduce exhibition and archive initiatives aimed at mapping contemporary art, experimental film and video, media art and industrial heritage. It is aimed at students studying in the arts, humanities and technical disciplines and at the wider public. It opens the discussion of technical and methodological questions connected with the issue of archiving and distribution and it is intended to stimulate further research in this field. Currently being published is a DVD anthology of various areas of artistic development, making thus far unknown chapters in art history available to the general public. Online audiovisual archives are being developed, used for the study and presentation of works of art, which can also be used as an area for cooperation between students, teachers, artists, and historians.

The spaces of the new laboratory of the Institute of Intermedia will host screenings accompanied by lectures and presentations of several Czech and international digital archives. The project launches the programme of this interdisciplinary worksite, drawing on theoretical and practical research in the field of contemporary technology, visual and sound arts, the history and theory of film and digital media. During the week it is possible to view presentations of several internationally recognised artists and institutions engaged in collecting and archiving. For example, Woody Vasulka, a Czech-born world pioneer in video art, presents his project of an electronic art archive (vasulka.org), which he has worked on with his wife and colleague Steina since the 1960s. The exhibition project MindFrames, created in 2006 for the ZKM Centre in Karlsruhe, is also presented, along with other initiatives and institutions, e.g. the Czech VVP
