Daria ULLRICHOVÁ
Synopsis:

Analysis and interpretation as the basis of an understanding and creative reading of a text. The seminar is two hours per week for Direction and Dramaturgy students but is open to students of other studies. The purpose of a colective reading is not only to exhaust the individual incommutable character of the work but also a practical testing of the method of guidance to understanding and performance.

Prerequisites:
Study Objectives:

1. To broaden and develop the ability to read and perform artistic works (drama texts, model) from the viewpoint of the plurality of objective contexts, characters, individual intentions of the reader, performer.

2. Exercises in the analytic method and development of intuitive, complete perception, imagination.

3. Acquistion of a fundamental overview of the general theory of performance: analytic and hermeneutic approaches.

4. Expansion of a conscious, reflective and creative approach to a text which is at the professional level a unit of responsibility towards the work and a characteristic of one's own imagination.

Outline and Syllabus:

1. The text as a core of contexts

2. Significance and Sense

3. Detail and the whole

4. Situations and figures, the world and I

5. Drama and Literariness

6. Specificity of a Dramatic text in the sense of technical (material) and philosophical (problematic, paradoxic?, illogicalness, a non-linear understanding of the world)

7. The dialog of the author and the performer

Syllablus

Reading and performance of artistic works is a discipline on the boundary of theory and creation. In the Dramatic Theatre Study the basics of the „trade“ enable a concious and repeatable (that is professionally executed) act of creation. It is the individual technological discipline and activity of the creator. Each reading is fundamentally an interpretation. If a theatrical production is performance of „material character occuring in a three dimensional space“ the a reading is a performance of individual features, the ideal space for imagination, dependent on the character of the work and personality of the performer. Reading as a synthesis of an analytical and intuitive approach. Reading as the path to understanding (the author and one's self, identification versus confrontation). Reading as a creative performance act. Reading as an expression of a disposition towards reality and the world.

Each semester one top-notch work from world drama literature is collectively investigated methodologically and intuitively. At the overall practical level, the seminar simulates detailed and thoroughly guided (as time and space allows) „reading rehearsals“.
