Synopsis:

The seminar's fundamental aim is to practically address the history of set design (its historical epochs) with discussions on visited contemporary productions. To gain an overview of contemporary theatre, especially theatre which works with current theatrical trends or uses an alternative approach and links traditional with new forms (e.g. site specific, new media, artistic and physical concepts etc.), both at a professional and student level, including students? own realisations.

Prerequisites:

Regular attendance, active participation in discussions, visits to productions, reflections on one of the themes in written, conceptual or artistic form.

Study Objectives:

To support and deepen students' ability to analyse theatre productions, their form and intentions, ability to describe them emphasising the artistic side, to reflect on influences both in the spoken word, written and creative, to synthesise them and put them in the context of contemporary theatre.

Outline and Syllabus:

Always a variety of thematic fields, which include several forms and possibilities of theatrical expression organised by each semester and frequently selected with a view to current major theatre events. Each theme contains a selection of possible theatre performances which are then gone over in seminar discussions.

Study materials:

Available materials on contemporary and recent Czech theatre production, i.e. collections such as Contemporary Czech Set design, Next Wave etc.

Also articles in professional periodicals - e.g. Divadelní noviny, A2, SAD Loutkář

etc.

Study texts will be supplementes during the year according to the assigned thematic fields.
