- Synopsis:

The seminar introduces students to the problems of translation of a dramatic text as an autonomous creative activity. On the one hand, it tries to strengthen their own linguistic creativity and, of course, their feel for the need to make the text stageworthy. On the other hand, they are led to honour the original and to seek appropriate stylistic parallels to the original.
- Prerequisites:

- participation at the seminar (2 absences per semester are tolerated);
- continuous work on translations of assigned texts;
- paper comparing in writing two (or more) translations of the same foreign language original;
- term paper: translation of a coherent excerpt from a chosen text.
- Study Objectives:

The goal of the seminar is to familiarize directing, dramaturgy, theory and criticism students with the basic principles of theatrical translations if the students' specialization is neither philology or translatology, but if in their future work they will still be working with translated texts. Students are to learn both certain aspects of general translation theory and important periods and figures of Czech translating. An integral component of the practical part of the seminar is comparing existing translations and, of course, one's own translation attempts, whether as a group or individually.

Theoretical aspects:
1. Theory of translation and translating practice
2. Czech as a target language in relation to languages of originals
3. Specific features of theatrical translations
4. Verbal action and linguistic stylization
5. The problems of translating verse and translating from various systems of versification
Pracitcal partt:
1. Comparison of existing Czech translations of one original (prose, rhythmicized prose, verse)
2. Work on students' own translations.
- Study materials:

In the seminar, students work both with various Czech translations of the same originals that are compared with each other and with original plays (in English or French).
The texts are selected according to the students' language abilities.
