Synopsis:

This seminar follows up directly on the seminar Contemporary Theatre in the West 1; it continues with familiarization of students with the most important contemporary Euro-American theatrical trends; besides direct individual experience with foreign theatre, it uses video recordings, foreign-language dramatic texts and, of course, texts existing in Czech translations.

Prerequisites:

- participation in the seminar (2 absences per semester are tolerated);

- continuous preparation and active work in the seminar;

- 1 paper during the semester;

- other studies as needed;

- final term paper

Study Objectives:

The goal of the course is to continue reflection on dramatic and theatrical works of chosen language areas (French in the given case) and to try to understand them in a broader historical context (in this case in the context of French rhetorical theatre).

Outline and Syllabus:

French drama and theatre:

1. The Bernard-Marie Koltes phenomenon: renaissance of dramatic dialogue (analysis of several key texts, analysis of recordings of productions, theatrical rehearsals etc.)

2. The aesthetic of the fragment and dramatic monologue: Philippe Minyana

3. Contemporary French comedy: Yasmina Reza and Jean-Claude Carriere versus Daniel Lemahieu and Eugene Durif

4. French „lyric coolness“: from Xavier Durringer to today's thirties generation.

5. Deconstruction of language: Valere Novarina
