Course description
Theoretical part of the seminar is focused on historical and contemporary depiction of landscape in painting and photography together with an introduction of the assignments. It consists of commented presentations and joint discussions. Part of the seminar is a written explanation within which the student specifies his or her selected location, together with its description and potential cultural as well as other aspects. Within this explanation student also has to specify his or her technique to be applied to the theme.
Assignment itself is divided into two parts: mandatory and elective. Within the mandatory part student has to prove his or her technical skills while depicting parts of the urban landscape in a cultivated way. Student has to document his or her selected location with photographs taken in diffused as well as directional light, clearly showing the effect of such light on the shape of depicted object and space perception. Photographs for this part of the assignment have to be black & white and processed through the traditional negative - positive technique.
Within the elective part individual expression of the following themes is required:
a) natural or cultural landscape,
b) urban landscape.
Resulting photographs should create a uniform series even-though the subjects depicted might vary. Technique of processing for the elective part is not specified, nevertheless any deviations from black & white photography on traditional materials have to be consulted beforehand.
Practical part will include joint consultations over the photographs. Participation within these will be mandatory - times and dates will be posted in the beginning of the course. For a credit and grade to be given it is necessary to submit all the finished assignments (i.e. the explanation or the photographs) and to have at least 60% participation in mandatory seminars and consultations.
Assignments: (assignment 1P4)
1) mandatory part: minimum of 4 technically perfect 30x40 black & white photographs with convincing composition and image content;
2) elective part: minimum of 6 technically perfect 30x40 images with convincing composition and image content according to the instructions.
