Synopsis:

The objective of the course is to introduce students to the main theoretical problems connected with modern communication means. In several chapters it traces the development of thought on the media, from philosophical and sociological discussions in the first decades of the 20th century, to the formulation of the theories of media and communication as academic disciplines, to the numerous alternative opinions presented mainly by modern authors. The effort is to see the problems in communication media in a generally cultural context, thus particularly in relation to their philosophical, sociological and aesthetic aspects. The aims to show that even reflections on the most modern and even future technologies have roots that reach deep into the past centuries (for example, the discussions of the internet and virtual reality are influenced by many traditional archetypes), and that it is impossible to understand the „new“ media without understanding the „old“ media and the relationships between them.
