- Synopsis:
-
A bachelor's level subject for students both of dramaturgy and directing, it has a theoretical and practical focus. It is based on developing the ability to discover, read and analyze a dramatic text and to model an ideal production. The next phase is to interpret the text, accentuate its relevant topics and develop one's own dramaturgical/directing conception. Students learn to make a literary adaptation of a text so that it corresponds as closely as possible to the given dramaturgical/directing conception, while still respecting the artistic style of the author. Students learn to become a co-author of a production as an integral structure and a specific system and to understand dramaturgy not only as a practical service for individual productions, but also as a creative discipline, influencing with the aid of a dramaturgical plan the finding and formation of an artistic program for a theatre.

1) Basic orientation in the field and familiarization with its historical and contemporary forms,
2) Theoretical and practical mastery of basic drama theory terms and categories.
3) Reading and discussion of a selected dramatic text.
4) Motivic and structural analysis of a text.
5) Modeling of an ideal production, respecting the characteristic traits of the author's style.
6) Interpretation of the chosen text with respect to a relevant theme.
7) Creation of a dramaturgical/directing conception.
Syllabus:
At the bachelor's level, students of dramaturgy and directing should learn a reliable approach to a dramatic text for preparing a production. It is important that they master the basic terms and categories of drama theory (dramatic situation, image, symbol, action, behavior, dialogue, plot, composition, structure, genre etc.) and learn to use them in practice. The foundation of every dramaturgical/directing conception should be a conscientious and sensitive reading of a dramatic text as a storehouse of information for its staging. Only after its thorough analysis, the grasping of all historical connotations and the examining of the individual characteristics of the given author should students proceed to the work's interpretation, so that the text is seen from the viewpoint of relevant themes and is not deprived of any important value. At the end of the entire cycle of dramaturgy seminars, the student should be able to develop a clear dramaturgical/directing conception and to make a literary adaptation of a dramatic text so that it corresponds to the conception while also respecting the author. The preparatory phase, climaxing with the choice of a production team and an acting cast, will then become a solid foundation for the real directing work of the students.
