Synopsis:

The class has the character of a beginning seminar. Through lectures, debate and practical exercises students are familiarized with modern schools of acting that have had the greatest influence on contemporary acting.

The basic focus is on the developing of acting styles and schools that have had a major impact on contemporary acting.

Outline and Syllabus:

Curriculum:

1) the revolt of realism against romantic acting (Antoine, the Meiningen company);

2) Stanislavski system of teaching acting;

3) Inspiration from folk theatre and the comedia dell´arte (Meyerhold, Tairov,

E.F.Burian, Frejka);

4) Brecht's distancing effect;

5) magical acting (Artaud, Grotowski, Brook);

7) develoment of the Stanislavski method (M. Čechov).

Syllabus:

Students should get an overview of modern acting schools and should try the methods out in practice. The foundation continues to be the modernized, developed Stanislavski system, especially in those exercises that emphasize independent acting work and preparedness for creation during the rehearsal process. The antithesis is an effort to follow up on the old comic procedures of folk theatre that inspired the creation of the interbellum theatrical avant garde and Brecht's epic theatre. Representing a similar return to roots is an excursion into the world of magical theatre in the conception of Artaud, Grotowski and Brook.
