Syllabus

The lecture encompasses a broad period of puppet theatre from its beginnings and simple forms through the puppet?s use as a means of expression in the work of writers and dramatists in the 19th and 20th Centuries. New approaches to the puppet at the beginning of the 20th Century brought new theoretical studies and also experiments in new or forgotten areas of formal puppet theatre. Concrete work by individual practitioners (using graphic and video documentation) makes it possible to analyse the puppet?s role in theatre both in Europe and beyond it. This is joined with work by contemporary figures working in foreign theatre whose productions and opinions on the puppet?s role in theatre will form the subject of a more detailed analysis. By studying the work of individual artists we gain an overview of the latest trends and techniques in some of the less common genres (teatrum mundi, shadow theatre, paper theatre) and their new possibilities.
