Synopsis:

The fundamental genre subject of Czech and world literature for children and youth and its changes with an emphasis on its drama, that is theate potential. A view into the development of theatre for children and youth.

Prerequisites:

Students are required to have a basic knowledge of literary theory issues and general literary history at the middle-school level, a perception of value of an literary text and interest in artistic creation for children and youth. Part of the work in the course is a systematic overview of current literature, particularly works for children.

Study Objectives:

Provide students with fundamental knowledge in recognizing the specific features of literary works for children and youth. Inform them of the various genres and genre variations which may be a source of material for theatre for children and youth. To expand their perception of literay texts and their tools. Develop their abilities and skills in the analysis and interpretation of an literary texts and recognize its value and drama potential.

Outline and Syllabus:

Introduction, some basic concepts, relationships, context

- Fundamental mapping of literary genres for children and youth

- Issues of intentional and non-intentional reading for children and youth

- A literary work and its layers.

- Language - the gateway to a literary work

- Current literary context and literature for children and youth

Fairy Tales

- Types and genres of fine folk literature; fairy tale genre variations

- Specific characteristics of magic fairy tales - event, characters and their attributes in a fairy tale (a prop view of the magic fairy tale)

- The path of the fairy tale to literature (Apuleius, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque and trend of the fairy including Perrault, 18th century)

- Pre-romanticisim and Romanticism and the fairy tale

- Theory of the the origins of the fairy tale; the battle over the fairy tale

- Motive elements, motif, motive lines

- Characters and their image in literary works (not in theatre)

- Andersen and authored fairy tales

- Lewis Carroll and non-sense branches of authored fairy tales

- Issues in authored fairy tales and fairy tale prose (historical and genre views - from the 19th century to the present)

„Stories from Life“ - stories with children's heroes

- Genre and historical survey - main types and phases

- Narrator issues - Narrative situation

- Plot and topic; story, text, narration

The specific character of literature for children and youth and theatre for children

- So-called children's aspect; danger of infantilism

- Aesthetic function and its place among other functions
