Synopsis:

The fundamental genre subject of Czech and world literature for children and youth and its changes with an emphasis on its drama, that is theate potential. A view into the development of theatre for children and youth.

Prerequisites:

Students are required to have a general knowledge of issues in literary theory and general literary thoery at the middle-school level, a sense of the value of an literary text and an interest in artistic creation for children and youths. Part of the coursework is a systematic following of current literature, particularly creations for children.

Study Objectives:

To provide students with a basic knowledge of the specifics of literary creations for children and youths. To orient them in the various genres and genre variants which may become a source of material for theatre for children and youth. Expand their perception of literary texts and their instruments. Develop their abilities and skills in analysing and intepreting a literary text, to recognize their value and drama potential.

Outline and Syllabus:

Introduction, some basic concepts, relationships, contexts

- fundamental mapping of literary genres for children and youth.

- issues of intentional and unintentional reading for children and youth

- a literary work and its layers

- language - the gateway to a literary work

- contemporary literary context and literature for children and youth.

The Fairy Tale

- types and genres of folk literature; fairy tale genre variants

- specifics of magical fairy tales - events, characters and their attributes in a fairy tale (Propovsky view of the magical fairy tales)

- the journey of the fairy tale to literature (Apuleius, the middle-ages, Renaissance, the Baroque and Fairy trend including Perraulta, 18th. century)

- Pre-Romantism and Romantismand the fairy tale

- Fairy tale genesis theory; the struggle for the fairy tale

- Motif elements, motif, motif lines

- characters and their images in literary works (x v the theatre)

- Andersen and the authored fairy tale

- Lewis Carroll and nonsense branches of authored fairy tales

- Issues of authored fairy tales and fairy tale prose (historical and genre viewpoints - from the 19th. Century to the present)

„Stories from Life“ - stories with children's heros

- Genre and historical pictures - main types and phases

- Narrator issues - narrative situations

- Plot and subject; story, text, narration

The specificity of literature for children and youth and theatre for children

- The so-called children's aspect; the danger of infantilism

- Aesthetic functions and their place among other functions
