Synopsis:

Lectures and course provide the main phases in the development of Czech and world theatre as well as the changes in theatre language from the beginning to the present.

Prerequisites:

A minimum of a middle-school knowledge of the history of literature and art. Independent study of field literature. Reading of drama texts, attendance of theatre performances, active participation in work in the course.

Study Objectives:

Introduction to the main phases of theatre arts, primarily, in relationship to the changes in the theatre language and function of the theatre. Based on the analysis of plays and interpretation from theatre production video recordings a sensitivity towards drama texts and language is developed.

Outline and Syllabus:

Origins and essence of theatre.

Theatre of the antiquity; theatre changes, its types and functions, sources of later inspiration.

Theatre Celebrations: organization, the audience, space, actors, music and dance, costumes, make-up; Helenistic and Roman theatre; todays staging in the antiquity.

Medieval theatre and drama; Carneval, fold culture and theatre.

Types of Italian theatre and drama from the Renaissance; theatre space, stage design.

English theatre and drama; theatre professionals; Shakespeare.

Spanish theatre and drama; Sacred and educational theatre; The Baroque.

French theatre and drama 1500-1800; genesis, existence and changes in style.

German theatre and drama and its reforms; the National theatre phenomenon (the function of the dramaturg).

European theatre and drama from 1800 to the beginnings of modern theatre; artistic v. popular theatre (from Romanticism to Realism). Forms of Realistic drama; Illusion theatre

The Great Theatre Reform (from Wagner to Modernism); new drama and theatre staging. New expression means, the theatre artist, director; illusion and non-illusion theatre.

Inter-war and Post-war years of European theatre. Avant Garde, Epic theatre, Existentialism and absurd drama.

The Second Theatre Reform; new social relationships, repertoire and alternative theatre.

Changes in acting and directin gin the 20th century; Stanislavsky, Mejerchold, Brecht, Grotowski (and others).
