The lectures and practical provide the main phases of the development of Czech and world theatre as well as the changes in the theatre language from the beginning to the present.
- Prerequisites:

At least a middle-school knowledge of the history of literature and art.
Independent study of Literature.
Reading of drama texts.
Attendance at theatre performances.
Active participation in course work.

Introduction to the main stages of the theatre arts primarily in connection with the changes in theatre language and the function of the theatre. The development of perceptive abilities towards a drama text and theatre language based on analysis of plays and interpretations of video recordings of theatre productions
- Outline and Syllabus:

Origin and basis of the theatre.
Theatre of the Antiquity; changes in the theatre, its types and functions, sources of later inspiration.
Theatre festivals: organization, the audience, space, actors, music and dance, costumes, make-up; Helenistic and Roman theatre; today's staging of the antiquity.
Medieval theatre and drama; Carneval, folk culture and theatre.
Types of Italian theatre and drama starting from the Renaissance; theatre space, stage design.
English theatre and drama; professional theatre; Shakespeare.
Spanish theatre and drama; religious and educational theatre, the Baroque.
French theatre and drama 1500-1800; origin, length and changes in style.
German theatre and drama and their reforms; the phenomenon of national theatres; (the function of the Dramaturgist).
European theatre and drama from 1800 to the beginning of modern theatre; Artistic vs. popular theatre (from Romanticism to Realism). Forms of realistic drama; Illusion theatre.
Great theatre reforms (from Wagner to Modernism); new drama and staging theatre. New expressive media, the theatre artist, director; Illusion and anti-Illusion theatre.
Interwar and postwar years of European theatre. The Avant garde, Epic theatre, existentialism and absurd drama.
Type of theatre reform; new social relationships, repertoire and alternative theatre.
Changes in acting and directing in the 20th Century; Stanislawsky, Mejerchold, Brecht, Grotowski (and others).
