Lectures and classes conveying the main periods in the development of Czech and World theatres as well as changes theatre language from the beginning to the present.
- Prerequisites:

At least a middle-school level knowledge of the history of literature and the arts. Independent study of the subject literature. Reading of drama texts, attendance of theatre performances. Active participation in the course.
- Study Objectives:

Introduction to the main periods of the theatre arts, foremost in relationship to changes in the language and function of theatre. Based on an analysis of plays and interpretation of video-recordings of theatre productions there will be a development of the perception of drama texts and language.
- Outline and Syllabus:

Origin and principle of theatre
Theatre of the antique; theatre changes, types and function, sources of later inspiration.
Theatre festivities: organization, audience, space, actors, music and dance, costumes, make-up; Helenistic and Roman theatre; today's staging of the antique.
Medieval theatre and drama; Carnevals, folk culture and theatre.
Types of Italian theatre and drama from the Rennaissance; theatre spaces, set design.
English theatre and drama; Professional theatre; Shakespeare.
Spanish theatre and drama; miracle and educational theatre; The Baroque.
French theatre and drama; 1500-1800; origin, duration and changes in style.
German theatre and drama and its reforms; the national theatre phenomena (dramaturgists function)
European theatre and drama from 1800 to the beginnings of modern theatre; artistic v. popular theatre (from the Romance to Realism). Forms of realistic drama; lllusional theatre.
The Great Theatre Reform (from Wagner to Modernism); new drama and theatre staging. New means of expression, the theatre artist; director; illusional and anti-illusional theatre.
Inter-War and post-war European theatre. Avant Garde, Epic theatre, existentialism and drama of the absurd.
The Second Theatre Reform; new social relationships, repertory and alternative theatre.
Change in acting and directing in the 20th Century; Stanislavisky, Mejerchold, Brecht, Grotowski (and others).
