Synopsis:

The intention of this course is to introduce students to fundamental information about the brain and clarify in what manner it plays a role in all elements of human activity and what significance it has for child development.

Prerequisites:

Completion of Psychology and Drama Training, personal experience in working with children, active participation.

Study Objectives:

Key topics are those concerning the relatinship between events ocurring in the mind and external acts of the child with an emphasis on the risk periods in development and the dangers of inappropriate intervention. Important are, as well, issues of plasticity, instruction possibilities, significance and need for communication with the environment, playful behaviour-creativity and their neurophsyiologcical bases. A set of topics concerning brain activity defects and their relationship to maturation and personal integrity of the child will introduced the students to the main markers of brain disability. The final part of the instruction in this course is focused upon clarifying complex care for disabled children and the possibility of using various forms of therapy including applied drama training.

Outline and Syllabus:

Curriculum:

I. Introduction

- classical neuroanatomy (periferal nerves and the central nervous system),

- functional neruoanatomy: brain stem, subcortex (basal ganglia, thalmus, limbic area - amygdalar, hippocampal, cingular), core (rear and frontal halves of the brain)

- neurobiology,

- neurophsyiology,

- neurobiochemistry.

II. Various neurophysio- biological concepts.

III. Phylogenetic and ontogenetic aspects.

IV. The brain and its functions: motor movement; empathy, emotion, sexual behaviour; cognitive processes (memory, thought, creativity).

V. Drama and the brain: experience, rituals, resilience.

VI. Limited findings and dysfunctions.

VII. Abnormal and pathological states.
