Synopsis:

A three-semester required course focused on clarifying the fundamental concepts of drama theory and an understanding through the manner in which a theatre work may be conceived and what creates the dramatic activity of its substance. As well, this course deals with how individual elements and procedures are reflected in children's theatre. The lectures are linked to practical activities.

Prerequisites:

An orientation in literary theory at least at the middle school level. An active interest in drama literature and theatre.

Study Objectives:

To learn to use instruments available in drama theory for analysis and interpretation of a drama text and based on this, be able to select an appropriate text (from the viewpoints of its drama and theatrical quality as well as its appropriateness for a particular ensemble). To lay it out and create one's own dramaturgic-directorial concept for its staging. Be able to by knowledge an experience acquired in the creative process to apply to the needs for children's theatre.

Syllabus

- Dramaturgy as a function of the theatre: Origins and development; phases of dramaturgical practice; dramaturgy in children's theatre

- Drama and dramatics: drama as a basic literary type, genre, text elements of a staging; drama criteria

- Situations, drama situations, stage situations: elements of a situation; two concepts of dramatic situations; heirarchy and merits of the differentiation of situations; stage situations

- Dramatic conflict: fundamental classification of conflicts from the viewpoint of the psychological and dramatic; direct and indirect confict; antagonism

- Dramatic events and dramatic plots: analytical drama, intrigues, construction of dramatic events.

- Dramatic figures and stage figures: dramatic figures, type, charactre, stage figures, character

- Drama genres: tragedy, comedy, drama, genre synkretism

- Dramaturgic analysis: time, space, figures, events and manners of its organization, dramatic situations and conflict, theme, poetics.

- Epic drama and theatre: the episodic manner of plot, B. Brecht and his program of epic theatre; The epic in children's theatre.

- Further tendencies of modern drama: a breadown of drama plosts and Cechov; assembling principles; the influence of those process on children's theatre.

- Authorial theatre: „Interpretive“ vs. "Authorial; concept of authorship; changes of position of a literary text in a theatre staging; open/irregular dramaturgy, genesis of staging; children's theatre as authorial theatre.
