Synopsis:

Interactive lectures over the trends and present state of the theatre in the Czech Republic; portraits of personalities, ensembles and other overall theatre configuration phenomena (theatre as a public cultural service, private and non-profit alternative theatre - independent civil initiatives). This course, at the bachelor level, uses lecturer video projection, publications and organizational work.

Prerequisites:

credit - written paper.

Study Objectives:

The aim is the integration of the students into the most current trends in theatrical and artistic life. Students will receive a wide overview of events in the field, developmental tendencies and current events.

Outline and Syllabus:

The first section is devoted to the delineation of topics, periodization, roots and context of the current state. Historical and international influences (ex: inter-war avant garde theatre or the Second theatre reform) are shown in the significant realities of the 1960s (the small form theatre movement of the 60s, international success of Czech theatre in the 60s and reasons for the elevation) and also the subsequent development is characterized (the studio theatre phenomenon and the peripheral genre of the pre-November era) - always with a preferential view upon the proper execution of theatre. This course uses discussion forums and assigned readings. Attendance is required. The first semester is completed with credit.
