- Synopsis:

The seminar develops material covered in the subjects Theatre in the Context of Western Culture and Theatre in Czech Culture with emphasis on independent handling of chosen topics in students' term papers. The choice of discussed period depends on the leader of the seminar
- Prerequisites:
-
- participation in the seminar (2 absences per semester are tolerated);
- active work in the seminar, preparation at home
- 1 report during the semester
- 3-4 shorter papers
- final term paper
- Study Objectives:

An important aspect of the seminar is continual familiarization with the methodology of critical writing, to which the students are intensively directed.

1. France in the late 16th and early 17th century - the societal situation
2. L?Académie française, Richelieu, Louis XIV., transformation of audience and public taste
2. Periodization of classicism, pre-classical sources, classical poetry.
3. Theatrical technology: decor, costumes.
4. Pierre Corneille: dramatist and theoretician
5. Jean Racine:Jansenist versus dramatist and courtier
6. Emergence of classical unities and the role of Nicolas Boileau
7. Contemporary productions of French classical tragedies
