- Synopsis:

The seminar develops material covered in the subjects Theatre in the Context of Western Culture and Theatre in Czech Culture with emphasis on independent handling of chosen topics in students' term papers. The choice of discussed period depends on the leader of the seminar; at present the seminar focuses on the development of French comedy from Corneille to Beaumarchais.
- Prerequisites:

- participation in the seminar (2 absences per semester are tolerated);
- active work in the seminar;
- preparation of a report;
- 3 shorter papers
- final term paper
- Study Objectives:

The goal of the class is to familiarize students with the development of drama and theatre in the chosen historical period and to draw attention to the connection between dramatic and theatrical creation and sociopolitical situations, the development of audience tastes, the development of theatre technology etc. The emphasis is on the role of period poetics and its influence on the forming of rules for dramatic creation.

1. Development of the comedial genre on the European continent
2. Influence of Latin comedy, Italian comedy and the commedie dell´arte on French comedy
3. Pierre Corneille and his comedy: L'Illusion Comique, Le Menteur etc.
4. Jean Racine and his only attempt at comedy: Les Plaideurs
5. Moliere (4-5 comedies)
6. Alain-René Lesage: Turcaret
7. Marivaux: Le Jeu de l'Amour et du Hasard, utopian plays, marivaudage
9. Beaumarchais
10. Transition to the enlightenment, development of comedy and tragedy in the 18th century and prerequisites for the arising of a new, serious genre.
