Developing Screenplays II

Discussion and Open Pitching Forum

October 14, 2009, 14:30-18:00 at FAMU, Smetanovo nábř. 2, Prague 1 / room U1

FAMU is organizing the „Developing Screenplays“ Discussion and Pitching Forum for the second time. Its success in March 2009 was caused by spontaneous reactions and inspiring atmosphere created both by general public and panel members. This encouraged students and professionals to open to public and liberally discuss their fresh projects.

We hope the second edition of the „Developing screenplays“ will help the authors to „kick“ their projects forward by obtaining feedback both from international professionals and their local counterparts.

To open, a panel consisting of international script doctors: Dick Ross, David Wingate, Gabriel Auer, Gaby Prekop and Czech filmmaker Pavel Marek will conduct a brief discussion on:

- Story traditions, and film as a narrative vessel. Members will be asked about the oral, visual and dramatic traditions which are at the foundation of today´s narrative film.

- Pitching: what is the role and what are the benefits of pitching in the story development process.

Next, students of FAMU, students from other schools, and film professionals (scriptwriters, directors) will have the opportunity to verbally present their own ideas for film projects, and receive immediate reactions from the panel members. Since the presentations must be brief, and the panel will be diverse in its opinions, the overall feedback should prove to be intense and exhilarating - maybe not providing definitive answers, but hopefully, opening new perspectives on the developing projects.

Attending students and members of the audience will also be encouraged to add their thoughts and opinions, thus contributing to brainstorming, and to an environment which should be both challenging and inspirational.

In conclusion, the panel members will provide their brief reflections on the discussions provoked by the presentations and the feedback.

Program:

14:30 - 15:00 opening discussion

15:00 - 16:15 pitching

16:15 - 16:30 coffee break

16:30 - 18:00 pitching (continues)

20:30 opening cocktail of SOURCES2 - participants of „Developing Screenplays“ are invited! Krásný Ztráty (Náprstkova 10, Prague 1)

11 authors (6 professionals and 5 students) will have 15 minutes to discuss their projects.

The discussion and project presentations (pitching) will be simultaneously translated (Czech/English).

Moderator: Pavel Jech, Dean of FAMU

Mentor ? or Master?

by Dick Ross - script doctor and tutor at SOURCES2 workshops

„Mentoring“ as an occupation is very much in fashion these days, with increasing numbers of professionals making themselves available as mentors for the next generation of film makers. They have an invaluable role to fill, but how many of them have actually considered the implications of this appellation „mentor“? From the original Mentor in Ancient Greece to the present day, systems of mentorship have marked every great civilisation and all share dominant characteristics, enabling the mentor's protege to move from dependence to gradual autonomy.

Dick Ross has been looking at this long evolution and the unique contribution made by these trusted and experienced guides, and compares their role today to that of teachers as efficient communicators of transferrable knowledge.

Beyond Creativity: The role of Mentors in developing original screenplays

by Pavel Jech - Dean of FAMU

Behind any great screenplay lies the work of a talented and inspired writer. But in the work of screenwriting, talent and passion -- though absolutely indispensable -- are usually not enough to ensure that a script works, or that a story powerfully engages an audience.

Besides the writer?s vision, the art of screenwriting also includes a rational component: tools and strategies necessary for creating and communicating great stories. Skilled writers know how to incorporate these rational aspects into their work as they navigate towards the completion of a successful script. But beginning writers often compound the challenges of screenwriting by misdirecting their powers of creativity -- creating obstacles that frustrate their aims. Fortunately, sensitive mentors can provide help.

This lecture will discuss the work between mentors and talented but inexperienced writers, exploring the symptoms of undeveloped scripts, and addressing how mentors can communicate with writers in helping them to identify problems, find solutions, and develop their natural talents for creating original screenplays.
