Synopsis:

This series of lectures is conceived as a systematic introduction to the history of European visual culture. The core of the course is a contextual history of art, but it also touches on bordeline and non-artistic phenomena that contribute to shaping the visual perception of Europeans, and on theoretical problems addressed through the theory of art, aesthetics, cultural anthropology, sociology of art, and other disciplines. Each theoretical issue is examined through the specific historical material or the specific situation of art and is discussed as much as possible in dialogue form.
