Lectures about film and ideologies are focused on the question; Is film in some way able to send an ideological message and influence its audience. During the course students will be introduced to various theory viewpoints on the issue of ideology in art. Partly, through film examples the students will be introduced to various, historically imbedded approaches of filmmakers trying, through film, to affect the audience not only through aesthetics.

Is it possible through film to influence reality, send a philosophic message or manipulate the audience? What rhetorical processes are used for these goals by filmmakers? To what extent is the audience able to be influenced by film (and the media in general)? Along with „recognized“ ideologically effective recordiings of socio-realistic propaganda, works of Russian planners or films of the Dziga Vertov group from the 1970s, we can also consider every film which represents reality a bearer of an ideological message. We are presented with a particular view of the world, specific values, opinions, etc.. In the lectures we will focus on the theorectical considerations of what that ideology is and if is it possible, in some manner, to communicate it through cinema (We shall rely, particularly, upon the research of the Frankfurt school, cultural studies, receptive studies and film sociology.) Concurrently the students will become familiarized with particular film examples of how filmmakers approach the problem of communicating ideological messages through film.
