Prerequisites:
Study Objectives:

Students, at best, should bring: an old battery powered AM transistor radio with analog tuning, an old cassette player or walkman. One or more speakers of various sizes, 3 9V batteries, a piece of rusty iron, soldering iron, tools, pliers, a knife, small screwdriver.

This practical workshop is intended primarily for FAMU students but is open to others interested.

(HARDWARE HACKING) UDĚLEJ SI SÁM ELEKTRONICKÉ NÁSTROJE (Make Your Own Electronic Insturment)

Lecturer: Nicolas Collins, Head of the Dept of Sound, School at the Institute of Art of Chicago

How to build an inexpensive microphone, or other useable instruments for recording and forming sound, or „Do you have to be an experienced tinkerer and technician?“ During the workshop we will build a microphone for recording, a piezzo, etc, convert a radio and speakers to a touch synthesizer.

Bio: Nicolas Collins was born in New York City in 1954. Studied composition with Alvin Lucier at Wesleyan University. He is known as a composer and performer in the USA, Europe, South America and Japan. Collins is one of the first musicians who began using micro-controllers in live performance. He is an expert in the use of inexpensive electronic elements such as contruction materials as musical instruments. He is a professor at the Dept. of Sound at the Shool of the Institute of Art of Chicago and editor of the Leonardo Music Journal. He is the author of „Handmade Electronic Music - The Art of Hardware Hacking.“ Collins has performed several times in the Czech Republic as well. He will present his music at the Exposition of New Music in Brno.
