Synopsis:

The course introduces students to the main artists and works of the European avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s and the American film underground of the 1960s. It looks at the tendencies towards structural and material film in Europe from the end of the 1950s up to the start of the 1970s and touching on the expanded cinema movement. It also looks at the evolution of avant-garde tendencies in cinematography on the European continent, with the main emphasis on Austrian, German and English material-structural film, which in the 1960s had profoundly altered the conception of cinematography. The focal point of interest will be the works of the „Vienna school of formal film“ and its two main representatives Peter Kubelka and Kurt Kren. The semester will close by focusing on work from the Central European region over the past quarter century and time permitting the course will also look at some work outside Europe (USA, Canada, Australia). Regular students participation is essential because many of the films cannot be viewed elsewhere.
