Study Objectives:

Systematická reflexe základních problémů a otázek spojených se vznikem a vývojem dramatického umění, analýza konkrétních příkladů ze současné jevištní praxe.

Mode of delivery:

Semináře, vypracování otázek k magisterským zkouškám a jejich prezentace.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Teoretická i praktická znalost oboru na úrovni bakalářské zkoušky.

Recommended optional programme components

Průběžné sledování inscenací pražských i mimopražských divadel, návštěvy divadelních festivalů, četba divadelních periodik.

Master?s examination questions on the history and theory of dramatic art for all fields at DAMU:

1. Dramatic (stage) art with respect to its cultural, aesthetic or psychosocial function: dramatic art as a cultural factor, play, image, entertainment and/or self-expression

2. Dramatic art in traditional Western (occidental) and Eastern (oriental) culture

3. Drama, dramatic character, and the dramatic in ?civilian? life, education and the arts

4. Theatre: an institution, building, space, ensemble, operations, means of communication, or expression and/or art

5. Dramatic character and theatricality (stage character): drama (not just in the sense of a theatrical play) and the theatre (stage), theatricality and spectacle, stage character and theatricality, the external and internal, obvious and hidden

6. Acting (?staging?) in life and in the art of acting (stage or drama)

7. Mimesis: (dramatic or stage) art as image and expression

8. Types and genres of dramatic (stage) art with respect to supply (creative intentions of those who do it) and demand (i.e. audience ?needs? and tendencies)

9. Types and genres of dramatic (stage) art in connection with its components and the usual or possible methods of their arrangement

10. Relationship of the theatre and auditorium as reflected in (realized and possible) transformations of theatrical space

11. Acting between performance of a role, comic production and self-expression: actor and player or comedien and acteur, professional and amateur, actor and entertainer

12. Classicism, romanticism and realism: attitudes and styles, periods and tendencies, general cultural sources and local period manifestations

13. Archaic (traditional), modern and present (postmodern): periods, attitudes, art

14. Techn? and enthusiasmos: preconditions and specific features of the creative process in dramatic art and its imaginative and intellectual factor, intuition and craft; convention as a condition for and a barrier to creation

Master?s examination questions on history and theory of the field directing of drama:

1. From Diderot to today: the origins and development of European dramaturgy (in the broader sense of ?thought about theatre?), taking into account the origins and development of modern directing

2. The origins and development of Czech dramaturgy, taking into account the origins and development of modern Czech directing (Kvapil, Hilar, E. F. Burian, Grossman et al. ? where does dramaturgy end and the director begin?)

3. The origins and transformations of modern European directing in relation to the development of dramaturgy (?intellectual? directors, ?arranger? directors and ?acting? directors; the double meaning of ?acting? directing)

4. The origins and transformations of modern Czech directing in relation to dramaturgy and taking into account its European context

5. Drama and theatrical (stage) space: the origin, types and transformations of modern stage art and the development of European stage design

6. The origins and transformation of modern Czech stage art and the development of Czech stage design

7. Drama, the dramatic and dramatic character taking into consideration the problem of the relation of the aesthetic category and of the concept of historical poetics (dramatic character of Dostoevsky?s novels and the lyricism of E. F. Burian?s theatre)

8. Space-time of drama and space-time of the staged work taking into account the specific space-time of various genres and styles

9. The dramatic work and the story, staging and director?s invention: story and action, the director?s conception and stage action, subject, story and theme

10. The dramatic, staged and acted character in various (historically based) genres and styles of dramatic and stage creation, the director?s role in the creation of an acted and staged character (see the relationship between acting and other resources for the building of a staged character in E. F. Burian)

11. ?Civilian? speech and verse, versification systems in European drama, development and specific features of Czech verse, the concept of spoken rhythm and its application in prose and verse; construction of the actor?s spoken part and the director?s ?orchestration?, voices and sounds, music as a constitutive element and as mere accompaniment

12. From playing out a situation to movement in space: attitude and posture, gestus and gesture, gestus of the character and gestus of the stage, individual movement and movement of the whole, the visual artistic aspect of an actor?s movement in space and stage design, directing and choreography

13. Interpretation and realization: analysis and understanding, the work and (current) context, ?reading? of the text and its concrete realization, the dramaturge?s and director?s conception and the genesis of the staged work; illustration of intent and the creative (rehearsal) process

14. The classic text as a cultural phenomenon and as material: interpretation, updating, adaptation, variations

15. Originality and tradition: ?classics? (?classicism?) and the present (?modernity?), canons and convention and their violation (?innovation?), the individual and the generational approach, tying in with tradition and trendiness

Referáty na zadaná témata (vypracované otázky k magisterským zkouškám) a debaty o nich.

Assessment methods and criteria

Ukončení zkouškou ověřující získané poznatky s ohledem na odevzdané úkoly zpracovávající alespoň jedno z témat ve formě souvislého výkladu (cca 3 - 5 ns), autoreflexe praktické jevištní činnosti.
