Course contents:

A literature course introduces students to selected literature works which represent the common and intellectual movements of the 20th Century. The class hour is divided into two parts. A presentation of the history of literature of a particular period (with consideration of the range of topics which allow for comparison) linking a presented essay on an appropriate topic which opens final discussions. The presentation mustn't be an exhaustive historical overview - the central point of the classes is an analysis of a work of the selected extensive literature covering the whole century (with cursory excursions into literary theory sufficient to enrich the spirit with the appropriate concepts). The course offers students controversial orientations analytical views of literary works. In the comparison process preferences is given to investigative styles versus the prevalent positivistic description of a simple reflection of political events (which means unbiased in politics and events!) The couse will point out changes in narrative and writing within the field of history, within belief in the text, continuously repeating events and returning to the topic whoc movement can be barely noticed. This is an interdisciplinary approach. A commentary of intellectual movement through the decades, marked by connections between spiritual and social changes but as well the displayed present of cinema, representing events of common trends whose echoes of world movement are shown in Czech literature. A survey of literary history is mor than just a simple list of works of the past. The presentation will link the original essays of the students. An extended field of essays should represent the setting of the course. This means to release oneself from intellectual habits, be true to the analytical critique of a text, be critical of ideology, cultural reproduction and myths of social imagination. Discussions are the result of intellectual communication. The literature course guides students to a conscious whole orientation in literature translation and shows how to choose according to personal interests and aesthetic criteria.
