Study Objectives:

Theory and practical mastery of the concept of the use of image expression tools and compositional tools.

Mode of delivery:

Seminární kontaktní výuka.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Completion of the „Camera study practical“ course and exercises.

Recommended optional programme components
Course contents:

This course focuses on the practical use of fundamental expression tools of the cinematic image and the application of universal composition principles.

The Issue of distinguishing the „imagined“ and the „consequential“ is one of the main effects of disappointment in the achieved results in image communication. Students attempt in the course to apply theory knowledge in practical exercises in diapositive form implementation.

An important part of the content is an analysis of one's material and examples which are discussed with the idea of introducing students with the conception method of image idea interpretation eliminating fortuity.

1. Cinematography as an information system - comparison of cinematography with literature.

2. The cinematic image, phraseology, structure elements, content, significance, composition, construction principles, expression processes.

3-4. Universal composition principles - the role principle - contrast principle - rhythm principle - symmetry principle.

5. Shooting - the foundation stone of cinematic communication, shot parameters - content - size - aspect - length.

6-9. Expression tools of the cinematic image

Image composition - lienear - 2D - space treatment, image format

Movement - internal and external movements, movement speed and character, technical tools for camera movement.

Lighting - technical and artistic lighting, image light tone, light constructions, lighting styles

Color - color perception, color arrangement, color contrast, color compostion

10. photo exercise assignment

11. Subsequent composition - fundamental principles: compositional relationships, movement relationships, light tone relationships, concept relationships

12-13 Analysis of the photo exercise - discussion

Each student will complete a photography task on color inverse material.

Assignment:

1. Markedly set figures in a generally busy street - figures rather in the background must be accented by at least three composition procedures. Spatial treatment.

2. Two figures and a tree - empty background, minimal number of image elements. 2D treatment.

3. Three figures and a wall - dramatic space treatment.

4. Three figures and a wall - 2D

5. City exterior - dramatic linear perspective, color perspective supports the space perception.

6. City exterior - dramatic linear perspective, color perspective does not support the space perception.

7. A figure before monumental architecture - emphasizing the the monumental aspect, angle and distance from the figure from the camera ad the building.

8. A figure at a PC (back to the camera) before a poster surface; a poster dominating the shot, clear direction of view by the figure, use of color accent.

9. A figure and a net - sunny atmosphere, use of one's own shadow.

10. Figure and window - treatment of great light contrast.

11. Common evening atmosphere - city exterior; in the image are several light sources.

12. Figure in a old devleoped street - dramatic night atmosphere.

Devote attention to precise composition, lighting set-up and costuming. You may use compositional processes going from the defined to the abstract in maintaining assignment requirements.

Material requirements: 1 cassette of color inverse material + development / 1(posl) .15 diarama / 1(posl)
