Course contents:

The history of film music reaches back to the beginnings of film but doesn't cover entirely the history of sound film. At the moment of entrance of sound film there already was a defined custom in the use of music in film, which co-formed the creative process and the expectations of the audience. That first custom, though fleeting and difficult to grasp, created the aesthetic conditions for the beginnings of film music.

Music in film was in it's beginnings the subject of much experimentation which will be coverd, particularly through Pudovkin, Lang and Claire. Some of these diverse styles in film music, in spite of the theoretical attractiveness, did not become the standard for use in film. Also we wll devote ourselves to the beginning of the so-called classic Hollywood style, which eventually became the most influential and traditional manner for the use of music in film. Then we will, at least in an outline, investigate the development of those early types of film music, their engagement and renaissance. Part of the course will be a number of illustrative examples of individual tendencies and aesthetic principles.
