Course contents:

2010/2011 Melodrama!

Melodrama is not strictly understood as a genre, because the manner of conflict representation permeating film, it usually ranks below a variety of genres. We rank a whole standard of film to melodrama today, so-called melodrama or women's films of the 40s and 50s, i.e. film linked to makers such as Douglas Sirk, Vincente Minelli, Nicholas Ray which fulfill to a certain extent criteria in the identity of the genre (i.e. a particular semanitic and syntactic regularity). We consider more interesting and important that the essence of that genre permeates the film narrative to a more general measure, such as civil reality depiction methods through ideal types. With gain there is loss due to the melodramatic idealization; we gain obvious representatives of good and evil, we lose touch with reality.

Part of the course is film screenings. Lectures will be accompanied by film samples.

Lecture topics:

- Melodramatic imagination; Balzac, Griffith, excess.

- So-called family melodrama of the 50s; Douglas Sirk, Vincente Minelli, Nicholas Ray.

- Thomas Elsaesser and Peter Brooks.

- Melodrama critique from a feminism perspective.

- Melodrama as a common mode of film narration.
