Course description:
Instruction is focused not only on the development of creative abilities in the use of photographic expression tools in journalism and documentaries but in class discussions and group consultations at least on ethics isses in the work of a photo-journalist and documentary photographer and their social responsibility, particularly in the use of photography in the media.
Consultations in topic selection, presented explication and subsequently about photos on an assigned topic (contact sheets, proofs, final photos).
The explication (A4) should not only briefly explain the manner of subjet development but also justify its selection which should not be coincidental - the creator's relationship to the topic should be familiar and if possible personally absorbing.
Tasks:
1. Unrepeatable event
Event, which can be prepared for. A collection of photos which in mutual composition (subsequent and simultaneous) complete each other and create a image story.
Components of the whole of the basic defined situation, dynamic subassemblies attaining the expressive moments of the events and detail approaching the fundamental visual or significant elements of the situation (if well selected and developed this can have an essential noticable value for the whole report - the requirement is, of course, among others, a qualitative and quick judgement of the whole situation)
5-7 photos 13x18cm (18x24?)
2. Documentary portrait
A captured form and characteristic feature of a depicted human live and a situation of given lighting. Use of facial expression, gesture, stance, surrounding. If the environment calls for it, finding the appropriate manner in which to bring the person being portrayed to the situation where they will act naturally.
Two people, on each face (head) and partial or whole figure and combination of color and B/W photography (possibly one person in color and the other in B/W).
4-6 photos 18x24cm.
3. Topical - conceived collection of documentary photography
The task will be appropriately selected through photographically documenting changes in Karlín, Libeň, Holešovice with a focus on the riverside areas and largely the irreversibly disappearing locations, single houses and other characteristic elements of the city environment, including details.
This is not a search for events (photos with persons are, obviously, excluded), but a capture of surroundings, their „spirit.“
The work may be a preparation for a larger whole in the second year.
10 photos 24x30cm
