This course is in the form of individual study. A study plan is set for each student with the aim to develop their music skills and experience according to their achieved level. For instruction guidance it is possible to appeal to department members (Prof. Bláha, Assoc. Prof. Kopecký.) It is also possible to study under an external instructor which the student selects and the department approves.
Before the beginning of the semester a framework plan is set for the students. A particular aim of instruction may be:
a) Recognizing techniques and particulars of playing on various types of musical instruments. Upon agreement with the department, students select an instrument to be studied. Playing on an instrument which has already been played may continue or begin with a new one, in order to recognize the issues of various instruments. It is necessary that each Sound student have at least a fundamental experience in playing a keyboard instrument, at best a classic piano, at least one year. in the course of further study the instrument may be changed.
b) Understanding of style differences in interpretaton of varous music styles and genres (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionism...., jazz, folklor...).
c) Mastery of reading music notation: reading in treble and bass clefs, knowledge of music markings.
d) Mastery of interpretation expression tools: tone, types of articulation, modelling the melodic phrase, using agogics, dynamics and color nuances, the functional application of vibrato, distinguishing the main melodic line from accompaniment.... Exercising proper intonation.
e) Understanding of the compositional structure of a work, music logic, overall form and individual components of music: ex. analysis of a tone system, harmonic structures, melodic-harmonic relationships (ritard, transition, anticipation, hesitation), motif relationships, meter-rhythm principles (heavy and light periods, syncopation), etc.
f) Introduction to ensemble playing issues, issues of the musician before the microphone, and others.
The department has several instruments which may be lent to the students. If the student is not able to practice on the piano elsewhere, Classroom No#. 5 may be used when no class is taking place there.
Grading: Credit award takes place after each semester based on performing before a commission. For the credit performance the student is to present a short example from the usual range:
1) Technique exercises (scales, chords)
2) Etudes
3) Elocutionary composition
As well the student should be prepared to analyse the practiced composition and present examples of beneficial knowledge from the instruction period.
