This course is an individual study. An individual plan is made for each student with the goal of developing music skills and practice experience according to their to-date level. Instructional guidance may be requested from department members (Prof. Blaha, Doc. Kopecky). It is permitted to study under a extra-school intructor, selected by the student and approved by the department.
At the beginning of the semester a plan is established for the student. The instructional aim may be for example:
a) Learning the techniques and particulars of playing various types of musical instruments. Upon agreement with the department, the student selects the instrument to be studied. The student may continue on an instrument already being played or begin on another new instrument in order to learn the issues of various types of instruments. It is necessary for each Sound study student to have at least a basic interaction with a keyboard instrument, best is the piano. This should be at minimum 1 year. In the course of further studies the instrument may be changed.
b) An understanding of style differences in the interpretation of various musical styles and genres (Baroque, Classic, Romatic, Impressionism....,jazz, folklore).
c) Mastery of notation: reading treble and bass cleff, knowledge of musical notation.
d) Mastery of means of expression: tone creation, types of articulation, phrasing, use of agogics, dynamics and color nuances, application of vibrato, distinguishing the importance of the dominant melody line from the accompaniment. Practicing correct intonation.
e) Recognition of compositional structure, music logic, overall for and individual music components; ex: tone system analysis, harmonic structure, the melodic-harmonic relationship (ritard, passage, anticipation, fermata), motif relationships, meter-rhythmic principles (heavy and light periods, syncopation) etc.
f) Introduction tothe issue of ensemble playing, issues of the musician before the microphone, and others...
The Department has a few instruments which may be loaned out to the student. If the student does not otherwise have a piano to practice on, one may be used in classroom No# 5 when no instruction is underway there.
Evaluation: Credit is awarded after each semester based on playing performance before the commission. In the credit performance the student should perform a short example for the usual range:
