Study Objectives:

The central goal of this class is to understand the fundamental values of the modernist directors who created milestone films in the history of cinema. These works constitute what we can call a „narration of solitaries“ - meaning a very specific, unorthodox and sophisticated approach to a film, its language and themes. The course will challenge students to consider contemporary cinema, though often celebrated is lacking in numerous aesthetic values and narrative possibilities that the modernists directors conceived in their application of cinematic language. The class will encourage an appreciation of the kind of cinema that does not only succeed at entertainment but which can be labeled „art“ - an art which has been nearly forgotten and unfortunately, often difficult for contemporary spectators to properly understand. In decoding these works we will point to the transcendental qualities of such art.

Course contents:

The course will consist of screenings from the works of Godard, Antonioni, Bresson, Tarkovsky, and others. We will then discuss the works with a focus on analysis of language, narration, theme, form, poetics, aesthetics and other relevant aspects of the representative films. I will also mention the personal approaches of these filmmakers to film directing and to art in general. I will not hide that my taste is subjective, and the subjective approach of the students will be welcomed as well.

Every week student will see a film on their own (at home or at FAMU library) which will then be discussed and analyzed in the forthcoming class. Students will choose a significant sequence or a part of this film and will write their own reconstruction of the shooting script: shot-by-shot, sound-by-sound, dialogue-by-dialogue. Students will be expected to be able to argue why they selected the particular sequence, why they think that this sequence is significant, and what makes it so specific and interesting.

During classes we will discuss shooting script extract and various aspects of selected film and of another movies, film samples close to its poetics.
